Diabetes
Many people suffer from diabetes, some as children, some as they get
older. For the person with diabetes, the feet are a part of the
body requiring special attention. Proper care of the feet can
prevent in some cases interventions as serious as amputation of
the legs. Undue pressure on the feet exerted by ill fitting footwear,
can cause tenderness, skin breakdown and infection, especially
on the toes and under the heels.
The diabetic foot has reduced sensation, therefore problems may develop
without the person being aware.
Management
of diabetes includes a well balanced diet, and prescribed
medication. Seldom however is the need for proper footwear
appreciated. Supportive and correctly fitting footwear is vital
to providing the balance needed to prevent the development of
weakened joints, tender areas, skin breakdown and infection, and
reduced mobility.
People with diabetes:
-
Check your feet daily.
-
Exercise your feet and knees.
-
Check for colour changes and hard skin such as corns, calluses
-
See your health expert regularly, don’t take any risks.
-
For a perspiration problem get antiperspirant spray or cream.
-
Take sock
insoles out of your shoes at night to dry by the morning.
The
footwear you wear today may decide the kind of health you have
tomorrow. |
