Weak and Collapsing Ankles

Many people have been told that they have flat feet. When an assessment is performed often the opposite is true, and the individual has very high arches. Examining the feet with the individual sitting down reveals the inherited structure of the arch, being flat medium high or very high.

In the case of a person with a high arch. When standing, the arch collapses and it appears as if they have a flat foot. In fact it is only flat because of the pressure.  When the arch is not supported, the ankle becomes weak as the ligaments stretch and the arch collapses. Good musculoskeletal function and general health can only be maintained when the original shape is maintained. Footwear with arch supports suited to our foot structure is the key. Often medical grade footwear or orthoses are required.

If we do all we can to maintain the inherited arch shape, then and only then can we expect good health and body function.  It’s when this shape changes that aches and pains begin.

Have good health when your feet are in good shape.
