Callipers and Splints

Modern times have introduced splints instead of callipers this is fine if the joints of the feet are already stiff but if  the joints are stiff flexible they need support and exercise, to fully regain mobility. In this case callipers should be fitted and not splints.

Callipers often will rehabilitate the patient, where  as splints will stiffen their joints and cripple them to the extent of having to walk on crutches eventually they could finish up in a wheel chair.

Callipers are best with weakened joints, pronated ankles or foot drop. Splints can be fitted when stiff joints exist. The aim is to support the weakened area during mobilization without reducing function.

Medical grade boots with built in orthotics are also very helpful.

Douglas’s discomfort:

“After a compound fracture of my ankle, I needed surgical boots and a calliper.

I received immediate relief from constant pain and my walking improved every month.  Four years after obtaining my boots and calliper I made it to the top of a 3100m-mountain pass in Canada.”

Employ some simple hardware and climb every mountain.
