Balance in footwear

Well balanced footwear is essential for our body to be healthy. It has often been said that high and flat heels cause health problems: yes some of them do: But most of  it has to do with the improper balance of shoes or boots.

Shoemakers use the term ‘last’. For those of us who like to keep things simple, the term ‘balance’ will suffice.

A footwear specialist places a shoe on a flat surface at eye level and looks at its last or balance, the relationship between the heel, sole and arch, and how it all influences the position of the wearers foot.

High or flat heeled shoes are not a problem providing they are constructed with a correct last and balance. Equally balanced footwear promotes a balanced foot position, preventing the foot from being thrown forward or slipping back when walking. Causing misalignment of the skeleton, lower body aches and lower limb muscle strain.

It is the trained eye of the footwear specialist that determines whether a shoe  last  is correct, considering the structure of the heel, sole and arch.

Shoes constructed with a correct last are an essential component in achieving correct skeletal alignment and posture.

Balanced footwear – balanced posture – balanced health!
