Bunions

What is a bunion?
In everyday language a bunion is a swelling of the metatarsal joint at the base of the big toe. As the swelling gets large, the big toe turns, pushing against the other toes.
Some bunions are hereditary, some are partly the result of unsupportive footwear.
How do bunions grow?
Unsupportive footwear causes excessive pressure under the first metatarsal joint. The joint becomes tender and red, and often becomes sore and enlarged, feeling tight and uncomfortable. Bunions at this stage can still be treated.
Here are some remedies;

  • An assessment of your feet and footwear is important to establish the cause and treatment required.

  • Semi-ridged full-length orthoses fitted to your feet and footwear.

  • Footwear may need stretching.

  • Use medical grade footwear.

Don’t let a bunion bung the way you feel!
